Thursday was National Day of Nuclear Technology in Iran, an event that was marked with a speech by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In his address, Khamenei revealed his tepid reaction to the tentative nuclear deal that his country reached with the US and five other global powers, expressing ambivalence toward the framework itself and doubt that negotiations could reach a tidy conclusion before the June 30 deadline.

Khamenei has remained insistent that all economic sanctions levied against Iran should be lifted the same day as the nuclear deal is signed. “If the sanctions’ removal depends on other processes, then why did we start the negotiations?” said Khamenei in his speech. Since the Ayatollah holds the final say on whether his country will accept the deal, negotiations could grind to a halt if the US-led coalition attempts to use the sanctions as leverage.

Given the low amount of trust that Iran has earned in the international arena, any nuclear deal would most likely involve a high level of oversight on the part of the US to ensure that Iran is complying with the conditions set forth. However, Khamenei intends to limit the scope of the US’s ability to enforce the deal, insisting that “Iran’s military sites cannot be inspected under the excuse of nuclear supervision.”

Khamenei has repeatedly claimed that his country has no intention of building nuclear weapons, since such an action would violate the tenets of Islam. The Ayatollah took to Twitter to reiterate his point, tweeting:

Iran’s supreme leader also used his social media platform to chastise the US for what he perceives as a breach of trust. “I trust our negotiators but I’m really worried as the other side is into lying & breaching promises; an example was White House fact sheet… Hours after the #talks, Americans offered a fact sheet that most of it was contrary to what was agreed. They always deceive &breach promises.”

If Khamenei is already complaining that the fact sheet was full of lies, can you imagine him giving final approval on a deal?
