The Obama administration has taken it upon itself to push for sweeping reforms to America’s immigration policies, rolling out the proverbial red carpet for illegal immigrants to receive Social Security benefits and work authorization. Thanks to his 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals initiative, Obama is reportedly responsible for a whopping 541,000 new SSNs being issued.
This number is especially shocking considering how much higher it is than the government itself projected. In 2012, the Social Security Administration estimated that around 90,000 SSNs had been issued, but in a recent statement to Congress, Acting Social Security Administration Commissioner Carolyn Colvin revealed the actual number.
In a memo to Senators Jeff Sessions and Ben Sasse, both Republicans, Colvin stood by the Social Security Administration’s “longstanding, rigorous procedures for processing SSN requests,” stating that “SSN applicants must present evidence of identity, age, and work-authorized immigration status… We will not issue an SSN if an individual has insufficient or unacceptable documentation.” However, Colvin did not mention the discrepancy between the administration’s earlier figure and the final total.
Even more SSNs would have originated following Obama’s 2014 executive action to expand DACA, but a Texas judge has issued an injunction against the action and will not lift it until he receives further information about the circumstances surrounding it. Regardless, the 541,000 immigrants that have managed to obtain a SSN are at the center of the Republican party’s criticism of Obama’s unilateral approach to handling the immigration situation.
Having an SSN entitles the illegal immigrants to receive federal benefits — including retirement, disability, and unemployment benefits — without paying enough into the system to at least pay it back. In the worst case scenario, an illegal immigrant living in poverty would benefit from $3 of federal benefits for every $1 they contribute, leaving an enormous burden for the rest of the taxpayers to pick up in order to keep the system going.
