One Texas man owes his health and safety to the fact that he was carrying a gun that he knew how to use. Fifty-nine-year-old Lonnie Lawrence was a storage unit facility when he was attacked by 32-year-old Aguilar Ventura, an illegal immigrant and notorious troublemaker in the community that already had the police’s eyes on him. Lawrence managed to fire off one round, hitting Ventura in the leg and disabling the assailant until law enforcement could arrive.
The incident occurred early last month in Center, Texas, a sleepy town located near the Louisiana border with around 5,000 residents. Ventura, who was “known by local law enforcement to be violent” according to a press release publicized by the Center Police Department, was caught on a surveillance camera assaulting Lawrence.
The footage allegedly depicts a “clear case of self defense.” Ventura began attacking Lawrence, but Lawrence was able to find the opportunity to get his gun and shoot the assailant in the leg. Lawrence then held Ventura at gunpoint until the police, which were alerted to the incident because of a shots-fired call, could arrive. Ventura was taken to a local hospital for injuries that were not life threatening.
Detective Stephen Stroud stated in the press release that “all the information and evidence they have points to a clear case of self-defense.” However, the case is still under investigation. Ventura “is facing charges of assault and terroristic threat,” but it is not certain whether law enforcement will turn him over to deportation authorities to review his presence in the country. Law enforcement officials expressed their happiness that Lawrence was armed and properly able to defend himself.
The story has begun making the rounds on social media, with the majority of people expressing support for Lawrence. “Lonnie, get some range training and the next Ventura that comes at you shoot him in the face not the leg, and do it until you hear the chamber go dry,” posted one person, while another cheekily noted: “Remarking that a Texan is armed is redundant.”
