    Kiraspondence - Dear Trump fanatics

    Dear Trump Fanatics:

    You’re the new Ron Paulbots.

    Stop.

Seriously. Remember them? They’re still around. You’re probably having Twitter fights with them right now about how narrow-minded they are.

There are Trump fans out there. Just like there are Ron Paul fans out there. You’re not them. You’re not the playful abbreviation…you’re the whole word. F-A-N-A-T-I-C. This means that it’s nearly impossible to talk to you rationally about the issues and candidates in this race so far. Even now you’re reading this paragraph and saying to yourselves, “I’m so disappointed that Kira has joined the establishment conspiracy to smear Donald Trump with bad press! The GOP RINOs are just scared of the Donald!”

Just like the Paulbots. They could never engage in thoughtful, calm discussion about Dr. Paul either. As soon as there was any kind of pushback or disagreement, the conversation would devolve into accusations of establishment conspiracies and media trickery.

I like that you like Trump. By no stretch of the imagination do I hate Donald Trump. He has been a useful tool thus far in the national dialogue that inevitably surrounds presidential elections. It’s true that he has an ego so big he doesn’t fear blowback from his statements, so he has been able to say things that other candidates would have to poll and workshop for 24 hours beforehand. He’s brought to the forefront some important issues that Americans have a lot of anger and energy about, but haven’t had an opportunity to discuss openly because of all the vitriol surrounding these sensitive subjects. In that respect he’s opened the door for other candidates to be able to talk about these things without having to be the messenger that’s about to get burned at the stake by the rabid hordes.

So yes, I understand why you like Trump. He’s refreshing in the same way that Scott Disick, Kourtney Kardashian’s kurrent (or not) kompanion, is the most refreshing part of one of the saddest symptoms of American entertainment – Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Yes, he’s a giant dip sack who mooches off the Kardashian name, but he’s also the only one in that family and on that show with the balls to call out the kooky klan on all for all of their weird, snobby, poser bullshit and he ends up garnering a strange sort of begrudging respect.

(True story: I crowd-sourced a synonym for “douchebag” on Facebook and “dip sack” was brought to you by my friend Jason R. Thanks, Jason!)

I don’t want you to stop supporting Donald Trump. This is primary season. This is how it’s supposed to work. We are supposed to wade through the candidates and argue and bicker and jostle. This is how we eventually arrive at a candidate. It’s painful and annoying sometimes but it’s all a normal part of the process.

Just take it down a few notches. You’re at a level eleventy-hundred right now and I need you at about a nine. Keep your passion; save your insults. There is no grand conspiracy to make Donald Trump look bad. He does that all by himself. No one is misinterpreting his tweets or twisting his answers. Do you think reporters like Megyn Kelly are supposed to craft their questions based on how sanely and calmly Trump can answer? No one is making Donald Trump say weird, crazy things. Just like no one is making him say important, bold and truthful things either. There’s no giant invisible hand pulling his puppet strings. Donald Trump is a one-man show, so let him be that and just own it.

As for the rest of us who want to wait for a few more debate rounds before we dig in our heels on any one candidate, there’s no need to be insulting. I assure you that you and your fellow Trumpeters aren’t the last intelligent people in America and the rest of us are just brainwashed by public schools and CNN. I assure you that you’re not the only ones who “get it.”

That’s just how the Paulbots used to think.

America has a lot of dumb people in it but Americans by and large are not dumb. It’s okay that some people don’t like Donald Trump and think he’s an ass muppet (thank you Jim J from Facebook!) for saying shitty things about women and basically anyone who disagrees with him. It’s okay that some people think of him as a reality TV star and not a serious candidate for President. It’s okay that you think the opposite.

It’s all okay. You don’t need to take it so personally. You don’t need to act like a liberal college student at a screening of American Sniper hosted by Sarah Palin and anyone with a penis.

America doesn’t need a new set of Paulbots.

Chill. It’s too early for this shit.

    Love,

    Kira
