A few days ago, Donald Trump criticized Apple over the company’s refusal to cooperate with a court order that demanded it assist the FBI in unlocking an iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters. In his response to the order, CEO Tim Cook very publicly refused to comply, as the order was not specific to a single phone, but rather demanded that Apple create new software that would leave all iOS devices exposed to potential unauthorized access.

In a rally in South Carolina, Trump responded to a question in the audience relating to job growth. Trump started his answer by saying that we have to “take jobs back” from countries like China, Vietnam, Mexico, and India – although he didn’t specify how he would go about taking the jobs back – and then somehow jumped into demanding a boycott of Apple.

“What I think you ought to do is boycott Apple until such time that they give that security number,” Trump said. “How do you like that? I just thought of it. Boycott Apple.”

He then went on to point out that the phone was not owned by the shooter, but rather by the government. However, Trump also omitted (or didn’t know) the fact that this is not a matter of simply accessing a database and obtaining a passcode, since such a database does not exist. The demand is that Apple create new software that would override existing software, and existing security features. I went into all of the reasons that this is a dangerous move earlier this week.

Apple’s response garnered support from Google, Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Mark Cuban, and John McAfee, who actually offered to hack the phone in question – for free! – so that Apple would not be forced to develop this software.

It’s not immediately clear how a boycott of Apple assists in creating US jobs.
