The National Guard was deployed in Milwaukee on Sunday to help police officers restore order after shots were fired and protesters threw rocks, bottles and other items at the police. The chaos in the city is in protest to the police fatal shooting of Sylville K. Smith, a 23-year-old who fled a traffic stop on foot.
During the ensuing chase, Smith reportedly turned around toward the officer with a gun in his hand. The officer who shot and killed Smith has been place on administrative duty while the shooting is being investigated.
On Saturday night, a number of businesses were destroyed, four officers were injured, and 17 people were arrested. On Sunday night, the unrest continued with at least one person wounded in a shooting, and more businesses and other property destroyed.
