Democrat presidential contender and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has long stood out as a vocal opponent of President-elect Donald Trump and everything he stands for, but now, Sanders appears to have found at least one reason to get behind Trump.
During a CNN town hall on Monday night with host Chris Cuomo, Sanders predictably tore into the president-elect, at one point blasting him as a “pathological liar.” However, when asked to name Trump’s “strongest attribute,” Sanders was more than willing to oblige.
“Look, any objective assessment in the last year or year-and-a-half, or how long it was, will tell you that Donald Trump did something extraordinary. Something that nobody, but nobody thought he could do,” Sanders conceded.
“Trump took on the Republican establishment, took on the Democratic establishment, took on the media establishment, and he ended up winning the election to become President of the United States. That is an extraordinary accomplishment,” he continued.
Sanders concluded his unlikely praise of Trump by saying that giving credit to Donald Trump for his victory is something that “any fair-minded person has go to [do].”
In the wake of Trump’s election, Sanders also offered rare words of kindness for the president-elect, noting that he “tapped into the anger of a declining middle class” and had the finger on the pulse of the disparities within the American economy.
Sanders also offered to work with Trump, so long as he is serious about “pursuing policies that improve the lives of working families in this country.”
