We can all try to be understanding since love can happen to any of us at any time but it was always hard to accept that Mary Kay Letourneau had sex with her sixth grade student back in 1997. They’ve been together, in some capacity, over the years but, finally, he has filed for separation.
Vili Fualaau is 33 years old today and most of his life has been tabloid fodder because of the actions of an overreaching teacher. While some have suggested that this divorce is a business maneuver to protect his “Cigaweed” marijuana cigarette distribution, his lawyer, Whitney Garder has confirmed that this separation is the real deal.
A source told People: ”They’ve been having issues for a while now. They tried to work through them, but it didn’t work. They’re still committed to being good parents to their children.”
Yes, that’s right – they have kids together and have been married since 2005. Letourneau, who is now 55, spent more than seven years in prison for having sex with Fualaau and gave birth to two daughters.
It has probably been tough for all of them over the years and, while we might think this situation is horrible, they have lived as a family for a long time. This must be traumatic. After all, Fualaau never even got a chance to be a single man since his involvement with Letourneau began when he was just 13 years old.
Hopefully, this is the beginning of some healing for everyone involved.
