A Texas mother is behind bars for allegedly letting her 8-month-old daughter drown in the bathtub, completely unsupervised, while she messaged her friends on Facebook and left a television playing loudly.

The tragic incident took place on June 13, when 21-year-old Cheyenne Summer Stuckey placed little Zayla Hernandez in the bathtub and started the water running, CBS Dallas reported. Stuckey claims that she became “distracted” by another child and left the bathroom.

However, investigators quickly determined that Stuckey spent a shocking 18 minutes on Facebook Messenger chatting with two individuals while the water filled up the bathtub. By the time Stuckey finally remembered to check on Zayla, it was too late: the infant was floating in the tub face-down and unresponsive.

Stuckey claims that she then tried to resuscitate Zayla but “did not know how,” so she called 911. Emergency responders quickly came to the scene and tried to revive the baby via CPR, but they were unsuccessful. She was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead; a preliminary autopsy report determined that Zayla died from drowning.

Now, the remaining three children in Stuckey’s home have been removed and placed in foster care. Stuckey faces one count of injury to a child and was taken to jail.

A GoFundMe page was set up to cover Zayla’s funeral costs. “The family has no final life insurance to be able to give their Angel the proper Celabration (sic) of her life she deserves,” the page reads. “This account was created in hopes that we as family, friends, and a community can come together and help this young family out.”

As of press time, the family has raised $125 of its $5,000 goal.
