President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Monday to personally put Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) to task for allegedly ruining his party’s chances of striking a deal on immigration after he misrepresented Trump’s words about certain third-world countries during a closed-door meeting last week.
Durbin went on the record to insist that Trump had referred to a slew of Central American and African nations as “shithole countries” during a meeting on immigration Thursday, but Trump fired back that Durbin was not telling the truth and was only hurting his cause.
“Senator Dicky Durbin totally misrepresented what was said at the DACA meeting,” Trump wrote. “Deals can’t get made when there is no trust! Durbin blew DACA and is hurting our Military.”

Trump echoed comments he made over the weekend shifting blame onto the Democrats for the lack of progress on DACA, an Obama-era program that ensured certain protections for illegal immigrants brought into the U.S. as children.
“Honestly, I don’t think the Democrats want to make a deal,” he told reporters on Sunday. “I think they talk about DACA, but they don’t want to help the DACA people.”
Some Democratic politicians have gone so far as to suggest that they would be okay with a shutdown of the federal government as a ploy to spur action on DACA, but Trump waved away that option before a dinner with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy at the president’s Mar-a-Lago club.
“I don’t know if there is going to be a shutdown,” he said. “There shouldn’t be, because if there is our military gets hurt very badly. We cannot let our military be hurt.”
