WoW movie should use Avatar’s visual tech

Writing about James Cameron’s Avatar now is a bit of an awkward situation since it’s a new year and it’s been quite the talk of everyone since it came out. Thankfully it probably isn’t too late to talk about the movie yet especially since this isn’t simply a “jumping on the bandwagon” piece. I would like to start off by saying that I watched the movie (who hasn’t?) and it’s awesome! While everyone has been raving about the visuals I also think it has a great story with a lot of meaning. I can go on talking about that but that’s not what this post is about.

I see you

I watched the movie a few weeks ago and by coincidence I happened to catch a feature on the making of the movie the day before I watched it. I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting anything that great from this movie but it was more a case of not really knowing anything about it. Watching the making opened my eyes to not only how great the movie is visually but also the amount of work and the technology that was needed to create it. The creation of the movie involved a lot of motion capture of both the body movements and the facial expressions and also several special cameras working together to combine the real actors with the CGI characters and the environment to create a spectacular visual experience.

When I was watching the movie it hit me that the visual experience would feel right if it were used in the World of Warcraft movie that was announced, which will be directed by Sam Raimi. I was looking to Lord of the Rings as a bench mark for what the WoW movie would look like but after seeing Avatar I believe that it would not only be better but would fit for what WoW is about. Using Avatar’s technology would be better for bringing the likes of the Tauren, Draenei and the other races into the big screen. The first time I saw the forest scenes in the Navi village, I thought that the place looks eerily like Night Elf land and those floating stuff look like differently shaped wisps! That’s the first time it hit me that “hey, maybe this will work for WoW”. Of course the WoW environment would be a lot more varied, given there are a lot of different terrain in the game but the Avatar tech should be able to handle it.

Of course, Avatar has raised the bar for movies of its kind. It won’t be a big surprise if more and more movies will be like it in the future. This only gives us WoW fans some hope that maybe the movie will be even better visually than Avatar was.

That strange glow

The Tauren druid was just chilling out in Dalaran and then it happened. “Earthmother, what in Mulgore is going on?”, he asked himself as a bright blue and white light started shining from his chest. Has his grasp over the power of the Moon started to go haywire? Will he need to seek out Archdruid Runetotem’s help or is this something that needs the help of *gulp* that not so nice Archdruid Staghelm? But little did he know that this was something neither Runetotem nor Staghelm could remedy because the truth is he really isn’t a druid and that glowing …read more

Happy 2010!

Hi guys. I would just like to greet everyone a Happy New Year. May 2010 be an interesting, fun and great year for all of us. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported this blog this past year. This year should be interesting for us WoW players because it’s this year that we’ll finally get to see the ending to the Wrath of the Lich King story, a story that’s been around since the Warcraft 3 days. We’re also expecting the Cataclysm expansion to come out this year, although that would probably be much later in the year. So …read more

What was with all that jousting for then?

Now that patch 3.3 is out the story of Wrath of the Lich King has advanced to another chapter and we’re starting see all our past efforts start to come together and will soon culminate with the Fall of the Lich King. As we look back at the past, indeed most things are starting to show their meaning. We now know that the Skybreaker and the Orgrim’s Hammer have a more important purpose than just being a floating moving quest hub. We now see the efforts of the Knights of the Ebon Blade and the Argent Crusade come together as …read more

The two mysterious Crystalsong camps

Last year I wrote a piece on how it seemed like Crystalsong Forest was waste of a zone. Back when I wrote we didn’t have the Argent Tournament, which gave a little more use to that zone through some of the daily quests it associated with it. But aside from that I don’t think anything has changed and the Forest is still a content wasteland. Considering we’re ending the Wrath of the Lich King story with our current patch, it’s quite a disappointment and also a mystery as to why nothing much has filled the zone.

While the lack of use …read more

After the Fall of the Lich King… what?

When I first entered the Halls of Reflection, doing it first in normal mode to get a feel for the place, something strange struck me about the conversation of Sylvanas (or Jaina for you Alliance folk) with Uther the Lightbringer before the Lich King barges in. He mentions something about how another would take the Lich King’s place were he to be defeated for without the control of its master, the Scourge would run rampant and destroy all living things. This is quite a powerful revelation if you think about it but it’s also quite a puzzling one.

On learning new roles: First time tanking

For a long time I was averse to the idea of tanking since the job scared me a lot. For me it was a huge responsibility because it meant being aware about so much more in fights and also prepared in terms of gearing. A badly geared tank would probably stand out more than a badly geared healer or dps. Aside from that, I’m was not used to the workings of melee combat since I played either healers or caster dps. Don’t get me wrong, I always wanted to have a tank character but the above reasons scared me away.

Merry Christmas to Everyone!

First of all I just want to greet everyone Merry Christmas. We’ve been celebrating the Feast of Winter Veil for a while now in the game but the day has arrived for much celebrating in real life. I hope all of you will have not just a merry but also a meaningful Christmas this year. Just remember to try not feasting too much with the food and the drinks hehe.

For those who don’t know or just forgot, we can finally get our presents from Great Father Winter in Ironforge and Orgrimmar. You just have to click the exclamation points on …read more

I want to be a red Little Helper so much…

If there’s one thing I truly enjoy about the Winter Veil world event, it’s the fact that we can transform ourselves into Little Helpers for a duration of time. It’s the closest thing for me to having the experience of being a Gnome, which I really enjoy. I’ve been playing as Horde all this time that I never had the chance to really take a gnome character to higher levels. I recently was able to hit the higher level of 50 as Alliance on another server but because of the class of my choice, Gnome just wasn’t a possibility.

Zarhym helps out with Winter Veil concerns

A lot of you are probably eager to do as much of the Winter Veil stuff this Holiday season especially to get the achievements but unfortunately some of them are causing some problems in getting completed, according to CM Zarhym. Based on what he said, the quest “Metzen the Reindeer” and the Achievement “Tis’ the Season” have been the most complained about. I’m not exactly sure if they’re slightly bugged or that’s the way it really is (I’m probably leaning towards not bugged) but Zarhym offers some tips to complete these two.

For the achievement “Tis’ the Season”, the issue is …read more
